How was it made?

Thrown on the wheel with speckled clay. Then, the raw form is dried slightly, and trimmed to clean it up into the perfect shape. The handle is added on, then the flower artwork is draw on with special glaze that stays matte. The flower accents are carved into the dry clay. 

Then, the piece is fired in the kiln for its first firing. this first firing is partial temperature (about 1,800 degrees) called bisque. this bakes it into one piece that is still absorbant, like terracotta plant pots. 

Then, the mug is glazed by painting on the designs with tiny brushes. Since the mug is absorbant at this stage, it absorbs the glaze right into it, so that it dries quickly and you can add multiple layers as needed. 

Finally, the mug is fired for the second time, to its full temperature (about 2,200 degrees). the glaze melts at this temperature, turning it into a glassy, smooth finish. the clay becomes totally vitrified, allowing it to be completely watertight. 

Throwing, trimming, adding the handle, cleaning up the shape, and glazing can take anywhere from 3-4+ hours depending on how complicated the designs. Then, drying slowly between each step can take a few days as well with monitoring.  Each firing takes 24 hours to reach temperature and then cool down, so a single mug reflects a week or more of work.
